cameras & weddings everywhere

Ready for this? Over 9,900,000 DSLRs were sold in 2009! Holy cow! Read that again. And I can tell you one thing, a lot of the people buying those cameras are thinking they’ll pay for that camera and maybe make a little money on the side by, oh, I dunno, shooting a wedding or two.

So, we’ve just finished the Winter Olympics. Stay with me here; we’re still on track. My family and I were talking about how you learn to do the Olympic ski jump. Now, can you imagine jumping without learning how to really do it. You know, you could probably mess up things REALLY badly if you didn’t know what you’re doing. And you probably want to practice a bit first.

Shooting a once in a lifetime event, for example a wedding, is just a wee bit, no, a LOT like a “ski jump.” You want to get it right the FIRST time? You don’t repeat the ceremony, you don’t repeat the kiss, you don’t repeat that kid smashing cake in his sister’s face.

So, I’m just putting it out there. Budding photographers, follow another photographer around for a while to get your confidence and see what all can go wrong (believe me, lots can). And brides-to-be, be careful and don’t become a practice run.

super bowl commercials

Mosaic Church in southern California is one of the six finalists in the Doritos “Crash the Super Bowl” Commercial Contest. Three of the six will air during the big game. They did a great job, not just artistically but in execution as well. They deserve to win! I love creativity, especially with humor.

addiction

pretzelmustard.jpg

I think I have to confess that I have an addiction… to mustard. Yes, it’s weird but I can’t seem to help it. Okay, I might need some clarification on the exact nature of my dependency because it always seems to go along with pretzels.

So, tonight, the craving was too much. I looked online for pretzel recipes. Although all the ingredients are here in the house, the time to completion would be 2 hours. Yipes! Way too much time. So, it’s time to find another dealer for this craving.

Yes, it’s way frigid outside. The cold front had come in and no one in their right mind was going out. Except for those of us with needs. I found out Target carries the frozen SuperPretzels. I bundled up, put on my gloves, and headed out. Probably only 5 people in Target. But I headed straight to the frozen section. There they were. I splurged and bought two boxes. 12 total pretzels. $4.35. Yes!

Home to the oven. Pretzels soon were warm and toasty. Holy cow! Like a burst of tartness upon my tongue. Mmmm!

Don’t worry trying to help my addiction to condiment that condiment. I know some would like to wean me on to something softer, like cheese, but I’m too far gone.

Go ahead. You need some now. Indulge. Feed that longing for all the mustard-y goodness.

time for another seminar

seminarpic.jpg

When: Saturday, November 7, 2009 from 9:00am – 5:00pm
Where: Mark Umstot Photography, 1216 Avenue K, Lubbock
Cost: only $99 if you book before October 15th ($125 after October 15th).

We had such a wonderful time at our first seminar and had to turn some away, so we thought we’d offer another chance to everyone. We’re probably going to limit the numbers on this one (maybe more so than the first), so if you’re interested, book now!

Comments from the last class:

• “Thank you so much for having this class!!! I understand how other photographers might not want for you to share this information, but I think it takes a truly good, confident artist to want to share his knowledge with students. So thank you.”

• “Also thank you for being so open and welcoming our future questions and being willing to help. It’s nice that you are willing to take time out of your busy schedule to help us amateurs, who will probably have TONS of questions!!!!!”

• “Mark, I felt odd initially coming into this class. It was obvious I did not know as much as some. You are such a great host and a fantastic communicator. I feel like I learned so much. I was so excited to see my daughter today and try out some shots…thank you for giving me back my excitement for pictures.”

This one day seminar is aimed at beginners and those with some knowledge of digital photography who want to master their digital SLR cameras and improve their photography. It’s time to switch your camera off of the “P” button or “Automatic.”

If you want even more info, check out the blog posting below. If you’re ready to sign up, call now 806-239-3657.

remembering that day…

911.jpg

Standing there in NYC on 9/11, stunned, not really understanding the full implications. Knowing that people were still in the buildings as we watched them fall. Knowing that I was watching people die and here I stood seemingly safe from less than a mile away. It’s strange. Still haven’t put it all together, what I feel, what I believe changes regularly. Thinking. Remembering.
